Photobook “ALPACA – Living alongside the People of the Andes”

About the Book

At the foot of the Andes Mountains, across vast highland plains, alpacas have lived alongside people for thousands of years.
Together with llamas, these camelids have supported daily life by carrying loads, providing precious fiber, and sustaining communities in ways that go far beyond practical use. They have also played an important role in spiritual life, serving as intermediaries between people and the sacred forces of the mountains.

With their gentle appearance, alpacas often reveal unexpectedly complex expressions—at times humorous, at times solemn, and sometimes touched with quiet melancholy. What draws us to them may be this delicate balance, a presence seemingly unsuited to the harsh realities of survival at high altitude.

In the severe environment of the Andean highlands, at elevations exceeding 4,000 meters, alpacas chose a path of coexistence with the people of the Andes. Over countless generations, they have become more than livestock—woven deeply into culture, belief, and everyday life.

This photobook presents alpacas and llamas photographed in Bolivia and Peru, together with the vast landscapes of the Andes in which they live. By turning these pages, the reader is invited to slowly trace the rhythms of daily life shared by people and animals, and to feel the quiet richness of life on the high plateau.
